Emptiness is one of the most important terms in all the Buddhist schools, but its range of meanings is not always well understood. In this weekend we will explore the implications of emptiness through readings, talks, and discussions, with an emphasis on how we can experience it directly in meditation. We will begin by looking into emptiness as it relates to the notion of not-self, a linkage explicitly stated by the Buddha in the Pali canon. Then two discourses in the Majjhima Nikāya offer guidance on a profound meditative approach called “abiding in emptiness.” Next we will investigate emptiness through the insubstantial nature of sense phenomena. We will conclude by exploring the empty nature of awareness itself and see what the implications might be for a unique style of meditation practice. The content of the weekend will be drawn from Guy Armstrong's forthcoming book of the same title, Emptiness: A Practical Introduction for Meditators (Wisdom Publications, May 2017).
