This program is designed as a continuation of the ongoing conversation among dharma practitioners on the broad theme of “going forth” into retirement years, and having to deal with the existential issues of growing old, facing sickness, facing death, and, perhaps most importantly, feeling a lack of self-sufficiency. The focus of the program will be on developing and cultivating a sense of emotional and psychological self-sufficiency so we are able to meet our “declining years” more purposefully and with greater courage. We will use materials from the Pali Canon as well as broader Buddhist traditions to reflect on the possibility of self-sufficiency.

  • Mu Soeng is Scholar Emeritus at BCBS. He trained in the (Korean) Zen tradition and was a monk for eleven years. He is the author of Thousand Peaks: Korean Zen (Tradition and Teachers); The Diamond Sutra: Transforming the Way We Perceive the World; Trust in Mind: The Rebellion of Chinese Zen; The Heart of the Universe: Exploring the Heart Sutra, and co-author of Older and Wiser: Classical Buddhist Teachings on Aging, Sickness, and Death.
