We human beings are smart but, as the Buddha pointed out, we keep hurting ourselves and each other, and our planet through our ruinous behavior. The problem is we don’t know who we are. Our unexamined, rigid, egoic attitude leads to impossible expectations of ourselves, others, and life. This weekend, we will explore the second discourse ever taught by the Buddha, known as the “Sign of Not–self,” where he proposes a simple schema to discover and ground ourselves in the actual nature of our being. This schema is the strand of five aggregates or skandhas running through all our human experiences. To recognize this aspect of our experience is to feel more comfortable, fluid and natural. Through teachings, group discussion and silent meditation we will take a close look at the functioning of the aggregates and see if they might open up a more realistic, flexible way of understanding ourselves and our world.
