Time seems to become more precious when we sense it slipping away. The urgency that one may feel teetering at the edge of old age, sickness and death can turn one’s attention towards afflictive states or awaken a deeper appreciation of the good fortune that has been—and is— inherent in this existence. This attitude of appreciation engenders a sense of joy and gratitude that brightens and lifts the mind out of a preoccupation with insufficiency. It strengthens the capacity to experience happiness. Likened to a flower in full bloom, appreciative joy and gratitude enhance the ability to open to life as it is unfolding, in a manner that is fulfilling—without reacting in fear, skepticism or doubt. This long weekend will support a sense of community grounded in reflecting on appreciative joy, and the natural qualities of loving-kindness, compassion, and equanimity that provide ease amidst the ever-changing conditions of life. The program will include talks, large and small group discussions, and structured meditation periods.
