The teachings of the Buddha offer a vision of deep peace and freedom from suffering as a real possibility in this life. With this attractive promise, many of us embark on the path of meditation with an attitude of striving and searching. As we strive and search for peace, we often bring to the path the same thirst and desire that the Buddha taught was at the root of all our suffering. How do we hold this paradox? The teachings of the Mahamudra and Dzogchen lineages of Buddhism say that the peace we seek is not as far away as we imagine. It is already here as a hidden jewel within this present awareness. Present awareness, in its most fundamental state, is naturally clear, open, fresh and awake. As we connect to this most basic, present awareness, we discover a deep inner refuge, one that offers glimpses of freedom in our most ordinary moments. The primary method of meditation relied on to access this jewel of awareness is called “natural meditation”, a practice of deep allowing. In this weekend-long program, we will explore natural meditation and receive an introduction to the traditional path of awareness training via the writings of Dakpo Tashi Namgyal. This program may be especially helpful for those who are exploring effort/effortlessness in an already-established practice, and those who are seeking connection to the practices of Dzogchen/Mahamudra. Complete beginners to meditation are also welcome. Required Reading: Clarifying the Natural State by Dakpo Tashi Namgyal (please bring to the program).
