Early Buddhist teachings offer a number of specific applications of the structural principle of Dependent Arising (paticcasamuppāda). In the texts, two different presentations of this Dependent Arising can be distinguished: one cyclical, famous, and often quoted, describing a circular pattern leading to the arising of suffering via craving and grasping; the other spiral, much less well-known, outlining a structural dynamic progressively leading to freedom. The psychological and inspirational dimensions embedded in the latter presentation will be the focus of the program. Through examining the textual basis, interpretations, and applications of what has recently been called “The Spiral Path,” we will explore in depth a fascinating and neglected facet of early Buddhist teaching. The program is designed for experienced meditation practitioners and assumes some familiarity with Pali terms and concepts; it will consist of textual study sessions, facilitated inquiry, and psychological contextualization. These activities will be framed by several daily meditation sessions.
