In the languages of various schools of Zen, “Attaining True Self” is often equated with Enlightenment and/or Enlightened Mind. Other terms used include True Mind or Original Self or Buddha Mind. Regardless, its articulation has remained opaque and open to frequent misunderstandings. This program explores this critical framework by taking a careful look back at different understandings of the term starting with the Buddha himself and extending into the later Zen and Vajrayana traditions; and how we can access the space denoted by this term in our meditation practice. Our current understanding of the term may be helped equally well by current research in neuroscience and structures of the brain. The weekend will consist of classroom discussions and formal meditation.
